Important Tips on Doing Laundry

This blog aims to provide you important tips on doing laundry the right way. Lucy’s Laundry and Dry Cleaning team have collected various tips on how to make laundry tasks faster and convenient.

Laundry is one of the mundane tasks at home that many would like to skip doing weekly.  Laundry can be mind-boggling from figuring out the easiest way to get out tough stains, what fabrics need bleach, what kind of detergent to use, or even as keeping your white clothing white and maintaining the colors of the fabric.

Lucy’s laundry team believes that it is always important to keep your clothes looking their best and smells fresh every day. Read on to learn more on about doing laundry:

Read Laundry Care Label

The number one thing you should always remember before throwing dirty laundry to the washer is to read the laundry care label of each clothing. You will get to know how you should wash your clothing. It is important to follow the instructions from the laundry care label tag to keep your clothing in good condition.

Laundry Sorting System

Sorting will help keep your white as clean and as white as always and keeping the dark-colored clothes from fading. This is very easy as A, B, C, and 1,2,3…. you just need to separate your laundry according to:

  • Whites
  • Light Colored
  • Dark Colored

Temperature

There are only 2 options to choose:

  • Using warm water for whites is the best option in doing regular laundry to your clothing. Although washing laundry in hot water helps get rid of grease, dust, and fungus. This is particularly good for socks and sheets.
  • Using cold water for colors helps prevent colors from “bleeding”, or soaking out in the water.

Washer Load Cycle:

The default cycle should be “regular.”

  • The regular load cycle of the washer is the longest cycle and has the fastest and most vigorous wash.
  • Spin cycles are when the machine spins out the water from the clothes. If you want to be eco-friendly, you may choose to hang your clothes to dry.
  • Permanent press cycle is for synthetic fabrics like rayon, polyester, and acetate as well as natural fabrics that have been treated with a chemical to resist wrinkles e.g. “no-iron” dress shirts.

Washer Load Size:

The usual load option sizes are small, medium, large, and extra-large.

Different amounts of water are required for each laundry. A typical top-loading machine uses the following scale for judging load size:

  • Small: clothing fills 1/3 of wash drum before adding water
  • Medium: clothing fills 1/3 to 1/2 of wash drum before adding water
  • Large: clothing fills 1/2 to 3/4 of wash drum before adding water
  • Extra-large: clothing fills wash drum 3/4 to completely full before adding water

Laundry Detergent:

Powder, Liquid or HE

  • Powder detergents are cheaper per load than liquid detergents and better at getting out stains like dirt and clay than liquid detergents.
  • Liquid detergents dissolve better in cold water. They are more expensive, but better at getting out organic stains like blood, grass, and pizza sauce.
  • High Efficiency (HE) detergents are specifically designed for HE washers and more expensive than regular detergents. They are low-sudsing and quick dispersing for use in low water volume machines.

Always remember that not all clothing should always be washed after every use. There are clothes that need to be washed frequently and others shouldn’t be washed at all.

  • Immediately after one wear: underwear, socks, undershirts, t-shirts, tank tops, shirts worn with no undershirt
  • After one to three wears: pajamas, button-downs, sweaters (Wearing undershirts will prolong the time between washes. A loser sweater could be worn up to six times if undershirts are worn.)
  • After two to four wears: khakis, dress pants, cargo pants, shorts
  • After four to seven wears: jeans, unless they’re selvage (Washing selvage denim should be put off as long as possible to allow the natural distressing process to unfold.)
  • Following after five to seven wears: blazers, jackets (You may be able to prolong the time between washings by spot-cleaning and using a fabric refresher to eliminate light odors.)
  • Weekly: towels
  • Weekly to biweekly: bed sheets
